Four Little Dawgs win two titles

Four members of the Palisade Little Dawgs wrestling team won their weight classes in both the Fruita Mat Cats Invitational and Grand Junction Tiger Paw tournament last weekend.

Cole Vanderhoofen (43 pounds), Randen Espinoza (85), Judah Guarjardo (49) and Jacob Lee (46) won both tournaments.

Clay Randall (40) and Riley Garner-Orr (85) won titles at Fruita, with Lane Hunsberger (43) and Terrance Williams (85) winning at Grand Junction.

Taking second at Fruita were Williams and Taylor Plunkitt (130), with Dontae DeHerrera (37), Braxton Romero (40), Damien Espinoza (65), Shane Lee (65) and Connor Shenk (95) placing second at Grand Junction.

College Rankings

Mesa men, women fall out of Central Region basketball rankings

Both Mesa State College basketball teams fell out of the top eight in the Central Region rankings this week.

The men’s team dropped from seventh to ninth despite ending its three-game losing streak by beating Regis on the road last week and losing by three at third-ranked Metro.

The women fell from No. 8 to No. 10 after its road split, beating Regis and losing to Metro, which is second in the region. Fort Lewis is ranked first in both the men’s and women’s regional polls.

Mesa softball team ranked No. 20

Mesa State’s softball team is ranked No. 20 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association preseason poll, released Wednesday.

The Collegiate Baseball preseason poll, released in December, has Mesa State No. 19. Both Mesa State teams are picked to win RMAC titles this season.

Youth Volleyball

Western Colo. 18 Red wins title

Western Colorado 18 Red won the grand championship of the Western Colorado Showcase club volleyball tournament last weekend at Mesa State College, defeating Four Corners 18 Ron 25-20, 14-25, 15-10.

Black Canyon 16 won the reserve championship over Western Colorado 15 Red 22-25, 25-20, 15-13.
