Mavericks place fourth in Omaha

Colorado Mesa University placed fourth in the women’s RMAC/Northern Sun crossover tournament Monday, the highest finish by an RMAC team.

The Mavericks shot rounds of 333 on Sunday and 325 on Monday to finish at 658. Augustana (S.D.) College shot 625 at Tiburon Golf Course in Omaha, Neb., to run away with the team title.

Colorado Mesa’s Michelle Stripp placed ninth with rounds of 81 and 79 for a 160, seven strokes behind Allie Ostrander of Augustana, who won a playoff for medalist honors over teammate Maggie Leland after both finished at 153. The Mavericks’ Jennifer Hilts tied for 11th place at 162, Jessica Berve and Amber Nicholson tied for 25th at 168 and Alisa Lindsay tied for 53rd at 175.

Mesa in 14th place in Arizona

Colorado Mesa University shot rounds of 304 and 305 on Monday and is 14th in the Grand Canyon Invitational men’s golf tournament in Litchfield Park, Ariz.

Brandon Bingaman recovered from a first-round 76 to shoot 68 in the second round and is tied for 10th place at 144. Ryan LaFramboise is tied for 48th at 151 and Sean Robbins is tied for 69th at 156.

Ryan Church is tied for 83rd at 160 and Jake Jacobs is tied for 91st at 163. The tournament wraps up today.

Hawkins scores in Bulldogs’ loss

Palisade’s Brett Hawkins scored the only goal for the Bulldogs in a 7-1 loss Monday at Battle Mountain.

Hawkins’ goal came in the second half after the Huskies built a 4-0 halftime lead.

Gymnastics

KidzPlex teams place in Aspen

KidzPlex Gymnasts placed first, second and third in the all-around competition last weekend in one of the largest gymnastics meets in the state, the Aspen Gymnastics Invitational.

Shaylee Wirthlin placed first all-around and won the floor exercise title in the Level 5 Children’s Age division, leading KidzPlex to a third-place team finish. Miya Spurger placed second all-around and won beam, Kynlee Renfro placed third all-around and won beam.

In the Level 4 Children’s Division, Torri Clark placed second all-around and won bars and beam.  In the Junior Division, Mackenzie Barrett won vault.  The Level 4 team placed third.

Volleyball

Montrose team wins 8th grade title

Columbine Middle School of Montrose defeated Glenwood Springs to win the 8th grade division of the Western Slope Middle School Championships on Sunday at Colorado Mesa University. Delta Middle School was third.

Centennial Middle School of Montrose won the 7th grade division, defeating Delta Middle School. Columbine Middle School of Montrose was third.
