Spring cleanup in Montrose begins Monday

MONTROSE — The city of Montrose will begin its annual, two-week, spring cleanup service throughout the city Monday, allowing residents a chance to rid themselves of unwanted junk and debris.

The service is free and has been performed by the city’s Parks and Streets Department for the past 30 years.

“It’s one of the most popular things we do around here,” said Jim Hougnon, the city’s municipal services director.

Residents are advised to place all items for removal on the curb by Monday.

During the operation, 20 workers on city crews will collect landscaping materials, including leaves and grass clippings, scrap materials, unmounted car and truck tires and used appliances.

The city will not pick up tree limbs, routine household trash, hazardous materials, electronic devices, paint and large truck or tractor tires.

Spring cleanup collections for the area north of East Miami Road and South Fifth Street will be made Monday through Thursday. The area south of these streets will be served from April 11–14, according to a city news release. There is no pickup service on Fridays during the two weeks.

“We try to work through the town in a sweep ... We get lots of calls from residents wanting us to go back, but it’s just more efficient if it’s out on the curb by Monday,” Hougnon said.

According to Hougnon, last year the city removed 153 tons of debris from city streets, up from 146 tons the in 2009.

The city is working to recycle old tires that are collected, and any old appliances will be scrapped at Recla Metals in Montrose.

Refrigerators and old freezers will be scrapped once the Freon is removed.

The city’s Green Waste Drop Off Center will be open every Saturday beginning April 2 for residents to drop off unwanted tree limbs and other lawn waste.

Hougnon said the city counted 5,320 vehicles using the Green Waste facility last year. In 2009 the city counted 4,850 vehicles.

A free day at the landfill is scheduled for April 16.
