State treasurer to speak in Junction

Colorado State Treasurer Walker Stapleton will speak to a crowd of central Western Slope school boards Oct. 1 in Grand Junction.

School District 51 Superintendent Steve Schultz said Stapleton has been invited to speak here at the request of school board member Jeff Leany.

Stapleton’s office told Schultz the treasurer is free to speak at 2:30 or 2:45 in the afternoon Oct. 1, after a regional meeting of the Colorado Association of School Boards at the DoubleTree Hotel.

Stapleton will primarily focus on discussing PERA, the state’s retirement benefits program, in which most District 51 employees participate.

Schultz said the district is looking into the price of reserving a space at the DoubleTree. Otherwise, a room has been reserved at the district’s Basil T. Knight Center for the speech.

Schultz said he has informed school boards in Montrose, Delta, Rifle, Parachute, Collbran and DeBeque about Stapleton’s likely visit and invited them to attend.

“I don’t know how many will come, but we’ve put it out there,” Schultz said.
