State’s best saddled up for Colorado Pro Rodeo finals

For Colorado cowboys and cowgirls, it’s time to ride against the best.

This weekend, the Mesa County Fairgrounds is the site for the 35th annual Colorado Pro Rodeo Association State Finals Rodeo.

The rodeo rides at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday with Sunday’s action beginning at 1 p.m.

The 2010 season, which began in March, wraps up this weekend with the top 12 placers in 10 events competing for the Colorado state title.

The Mesa County Sheriff’s Posse has sponsored a rodeo in Grand Junction for the past 54 years and is in its seventh year sponsoring the CPRA.

“It’s been great,” George Decker of the Mesa County Sheriff’s Posse said. “We have support from everyone locally, and this brings in a lot of people from all over the state.”

The CPRA features the best competitors, and it’s not only limited to humans.

The cowboys vote on the livestock and bring in the best performing stock for all the events.

The rodeo features bareback riding, barrel racing, breakaway roping, bull riding, calf roping, mixed team roping, saddle bronc, steer wrestling, team roping and mixed team roping.

There are a couple of events where returning champions are leading the standings heading into the state finals.

In bareback riding, 2009 champion Larry Carter leads the standings and 2009 saddle bronc champion Chad Mosher is also in the lead heading into this weekend.

In bull riding, 2007-08 champion Jake Booco is in the lead with Fruita’s Tony Mendes currently in second place.

The points from Friday and Saturday are taken into consideration, and the champions are declared after Sunday’s action.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $7 for ages 7-17 and ages six and under are free.
