Student hosting concerts to benefit school bands

Palisade High School freshman Josh Anders raised $1,600 last year during a fundraising concert for school bands.

The 15-year-old hopes to raise thousands more for middle school and high school bands this year when he expands the fundraiser to three concerts, the first of which will take place at 7 tonight at Palisade High. Another concert will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday at Roper Music, and a third will start at 7 p.m. May 11 at Grand Junction High School.

Each concert will feature a different set of music performed by bands from Grand Junction High, Palisade High, Bookcliff Middle School, Mt. Garfield Middle School and Orchard Mesa Middle School. Anders will divide money raised from the concerts to each of the participating school’s bands. A donation of $10 is suggested for admittance to each concert.

Anders will play trumpet with the Palisade High Jazz Band A at the April 28 and May 11 concerts. He said District 51 budget cuts and the prospect of seeing less funding go to music inspired him to raise money.

“Music is really important to me. It can help you academically. If you limit what helps schools get better scores, then you’re limiting your education also,” Anders said.

He sent an email to all band directors in the school district and asked them to participate in this year’s concert series.

“I think they can relate pretty well,” he said. “What drove me was the fact band directors only get about $200 a year to buy new music and instruments. You can buy one instrument with that, and that’s it, really.”

About 200 people attended a fundraising concert Anders put together last year that featured music from Palisade High and Mt. Garfield bands. Anders said he expects 250 to 300 people to attend each concert this year because there are more bands involved.

“This is going to be a jazzy, family-friendly concert. It’s open to all ages and appropriate for all ages,” he said.
