Student raising cash for national history bee
Holy Family Catholic School seventh-grader Marcin Latek has earned a spot to compete at the National History Bee this summer in Atlanta. This Tuesday, he hopes to earn enough money to get there.
Latek’s father, Holy Family maintenance employee Janusz Latek, said the family cannot afford the trip to Georgia. So his two children, 13-year-old Marcin and 11-year-old Magdalena, both Holy Family students, plan to raise funds to make the trip with a benefit concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the gym in Holy Family, 786 26 1/2 Road.
The siblings will play classics by Frederic Chopin, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Scott Joplin and others on piano for about an hour. There is no ticket price — the family is simply asking for donations.
Marcin Latek and classmate Isaac DePascal both performed well enough at a recent regional history bee competition in Denver to qualify with more than 900 other students from around the U.S. to compete in the National History Bee June 6-8. Latek and three other Holy Family students qualified for the regional contest, which involved students buzzing in answers to various history questions, and by taking an online history test.
Janusz Latek said his son developed an interest in history by reading several history-focused books and is looking forward to the competition.
