Students do the math at regional competition

Marcelino Ortiz of the Delta Middle School MathCounts Team thinks hard at the opening teat of the competition at the Holy Family Middle School this morning. Teams from 22 schools in Colorado are competing at a chance to go to Florida in May.

Western Slope students scored high marks Saturday at the MathCounts competition at Holy Family Middle School. The contest is sponsored by the Ute Chapter of the Professional Engineers of Colorado.

Team results: first place, Redlands Middle School; second place, Delta Middle School, third place, Holy Family Catholic Middle School; fourth place, East Middle School.

Countdown round: first place, Samantha Moore, Mount Garfield Middle School; second place,
Evan Atchison, Mesa Homeschool; third place, Lindsay Erb,  Holy Family School; fourth place, Matisse Lovett,  Paonia Junior High School.

•  Three teams advanced to the state contest March 21 at the University of Denver: Redlands Middle School, Delta Middle School and Holy Family Catholic School.

•  Individuals advancing to the state contest are: Atchison of Mesa Homeschool;  Moore of Mount Garfield Middle School; Lovett of Paonia Junior High School; Blake Duval, Hotchkiss K-8; Brian Pautsch,  Mesa Homeschool; Daniel Ness, East Middle School; Michael Merluzzi, West Middle School; Bethany Tourjee,  Dolores Middle School; Casey Lingelbach, Hotchkiss K-8; Naiya Phillips, Dolores Middle School; Justin Fay,  Caprock Academy; and Julie Navarro, Rifle Middle School.
