Suppes declares
his candidacy
for Senate seat

Orchard City Mayor Don Suppes has announced plans to run for Senate District 5 in 2014.

The lifelong Delta County Republican made the announcement at the county’s Lincoln Day Dinner last weekend.

“I want my kids to have the same opportunities in Colorado that I have had, and if things don’t change that will never happen,” Suppes said in a statement.

Suppes said he’s been watching the goings-on at the Colorado Capitol this session and said the majority Democrats have pushed a “liberal socialist agenda.”

The district includes Delta, Chaffee, Eagle, Gunnison, Hinsdale, Lake and Pitkin counties. Currently, the seat is held by Sen. Gail Schwartz, D-Snowmass Village, who cannot run again because of term limits.

To date, no one else has formally announced for the seat.

Suppes, a graduate of Delta High School and Mesa State College, has served as Orchard City mayor since 2008. He also has served as the GOP party chairman in the county since 2007.

Suppes and his wife, Beth, have 3-year-old twin boys.
