Suspect cries as robbery unfolds
A Mesa County woman who is accused of robbing a convenience store at gunpoint cried and apologized as she pointed a gun at a store clerk, according to an affidavit, saying she needed the money for her 11-month-old son.
Brittany Hailey, 23, was arrested Christmas Eve in connection with the Saturday night armed robbery at C&F Food Store, 3199 Mesa Ave.
Hailey turned herself in after the incident stating “she was remorseful for scaring the clerk at C&F,” according to her arrest affidavit.
“At some point while (the clerk) was ringing up the items on the counter, the female pulled out a black handgun, pointed it at (the clerk). (The clerk) stated the female instantly became upset, started crying, and stating she was sorry as she was only doing this for her son,” the affidavit said.
Hailey initially acted like she was going to purchase chips, some drinks and two cartons of cigarettes before she pulled a gun from the front of her waistband and demanded money, according to her affidavit. The clerk handed over the items as well as all the cash in a register.
After video taken from the store was distributed, a person came forward to report that Hailey and another man were at his home on the day of the robbery. An officer who knew Hailey from past experiences also contacted her, reporting to the Sheriff’s Office that she wanted to turn herself in.
Hailey faces two felony charges including aggravated robbery and menacing and a misdemeanor charge of theft between $300 and $750.
