Suspect held in North Avenue stabbing

A parolee is accused of stabbing a man at a North Avenue hotel after a confrontation over a woman, according to an arrest affidavit.

Justin Allen Vicino, 29, of Grand Junction, was booked into Mesa County Jail on Thursday on suspicion of first-degree assault with a deadly weapon and menacing, related to the stabbing Wednesday night of 26-year-old Dustin Vogt outside a room at Monument Inn, 1600 North Ave.

Vogt was stabbed once in the abdomen, but police said his injury was not life-threatening.

Vogt initially misled an investigator, saying he was stabbed after he and his assailant were in a confrontation when someone threw a bottle at the door of his hotel room, the affidavit said. He told officers the suspect ran away.

The affidavit said Vogt changed his story Thursday, saying the suspect intervened after Vogt and a woman were involved in a fight. Vogt said he “tried to slap the woman,” and the same woman later told police that she was slapped.

The suspect, whom Vogt later identified in a photo line-up as Vicino, allegedly approached with a 5- to 6-inch knife after the incident with the woman, the affidavit said.

“Dustin stated he (Dustin) threw his hands up in the air and said something to the effect of, ‘If you’re going to do something, do it,’ ” the affidavit said. Vogt was stabbed once.

Vicino was ordered held on $50,000 bond.

According to records with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Vicino has been arrested nine times since 1998 on charges including assault on a peace officer, forgery and burglary, and he served three stints in Colorado prisons.

Jail booking records indicate Vicino had been staying at the Grand Junction Rescue Mission, 550 South Ave.
