Symphony to perform student’s award-winning composition

Melanie Ligon, 13, won the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra’s Crystal Baton Composition Competition. Her piece, “Hints of Havasu,” will be performed by the symphony on Tuesday, Jan. 25.

Even though Melanie Ligon is only 13 years old, she is a seasoned enough musician to know where to find inspiration.

With the sounds of a Native American flute in her mind and images of the Grand Canyon in her eyes, the Redlands Middle School seventh-grader composed “Hints of Havasu.” The piece won the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra’s second annual Crystal Baton Composition Competition.

Ligon’s winning melody will be arranged and orchestrated for a 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25, symphony performance at Grand Junction High School.

Ligon is excited to hear how an orchestra takes her piano melody and turns it into an orchestral piece.

The winning piece was composed in a minor key because Ligon prefers “minor sounds” over the more common compositions written in major scales.

Ligon, who is the daughter of Heather and Rob Ligon, began playing piano five years ago.

She takes lessons from Bobbi Hardy, who requires her students to dabble in composition, Ligon said.
