Tea Party Express to make GJ stop

The Tea Party Express, which kicked off a cross-country tour on Saturday in Searchlight, Nev., is to stop Wednesday in Grand Junction.

Sarah Palin, the 2008 Republican vice-presidential candidate, kicked off the rolling protest, the third across the United States, in the home of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

The Tea Party Express is themed “Just Vote Them Out,” and Palin last week targeted Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District as one district where conservatives could oust a Democrat: U.S. Rep. John Salazar.

Speakers and entertainment will kick off the stop for the Tea Party Express at 9 a.m. at Sherwood Park.

The express bus is to arrive at 10 a.m., where there will be a rally before the bus heads east to Denver for another rally that evening.

Local speakers include Mike Bambino, a Grand Junction businessman and critic of Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., who is running for election after being appointed to the post last year.

Grand Valley residents Joyce Shaffer and Lela Sturchio will sing during the event.

The Tea Party Express tour will culminate April 15 with a tax day rally in Washington, D.C.

Western Colorado tea party activists will have a rally in Grand Junction, also on April 15, with Jon Caldara of the Golden-based Independence Institute.
