Teacher arrested on sex charge
Montrose police arrested Montrose High School band teacher Andrew Burke on Wednesday on suspicion he had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl sometime between December 2007 and August 2008.
Montrose Police Department Cmdr. Gene Lillard said he could not comment on the nature of the relationship or provide details.
Burke has worked for the Montrose School District for eight years and still was listed as a teacher at the school Thursday evening, but he has been placed on administrative leave, according to the Montrose Daily Press. The newspaper said Burke, 37, is being held without bond on suspicion of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust, a class three felony.
Lillard said a Montrose school district employee was told about Burke having a sexual relationship with the girl, and the employee relayed the information to police May 29, sparking an investigation.
