Teen accused of attempted murder of boy

An 18-year-old inmate at the Grand Mesa Youth Detention Center was arrested on suspicion he attempted to stab a 16-year-old inmate in the neck with a pencil.

Tyler Allen Adkins was in custody of the Mesa County Jail on Wednesday on a $150,000 bond on suspicion of attempted murder and criminal attempt.

According to an affidavit, Adkins and his alleged victim had been feuding for months at the detention center, calling each other names and flashing gang signs.

Adkins told police he sharpened a pencil and hid it in his robe until the two were in the showers. Once, there Adkins punched the boy in the face and stabbed him in the arm with the pencil, though “he was trying to stab (the boy) in the jugular (vein),” the affidavit said.

After an officer told Adkins that stabbing someone in the neck could be fatal, Adkins said he was glad his attempt failed, the affidavit said.
