Teen accused of trespassing, assaulting officer after vehicle break-ins

A Grand Junction teenager was arrested early Friday morning on suspicion he broke into several cars and a garage, then assaulted a police officer.

Matthew Stephen Roybal, 18, 616 Cottage Meadows Court, was jailed on suspicion of second-degree assault, first-degree criminal trespass, second-degree criminal trespass, obstructing a peace officer and resisting arrest.

Grand Junction police Sgt. Matt Smith said Sunday officers were called at 4:14 a.m. to a possible trespassing or harassment in progress in the area of North 25th Street and Mesa Avenue. Upon arrival, they contacted Roybal inside a vehicle that didn’t belong to him.

Smith said when officers tried to detain Roybal, he became combative, assaulted one of them and ran away. He was apprehended a short distance away.

A police report indicates Roybal entered several vehicles, yards and a garage in the area. Smith said he didn’t know exactly how many vehicles Roybal entered or whether he stole anything.

The officer who was assaulted by Roybal wasn’t seriously injured, Smith said.
