Teen says suspect took, crashed ‘my baby’

SHELBY BATES looks over a pickup that he and his father had restored and painted. The vehicle was taken from his home on 16 Road on Sunday morning and crashed along J Road just west of 22 Road.

A young driver is suspected of taking his friend’s truck without permission and going for a joy ride that ended in a crash Sunday morning.

Wrapped in a blanket and visibly shaken at the crash scene Sunday morning, the owner of the truck, 16-year-old Shelby Bates, said he doesn’t know how his friend got his keys or why he would have taken the truck. Bates was not in the vehicle when it was wrecked.

Bates, who got his license in November, said he and his dad restored the blue truck with red, orange and yellow stripes and the number 13 painted on its side.

“He wrecked my baby,” Bates said, watching his vehicle being pulled onto a tow truck.

The pickup was taken from Bates’ 16 Road home and rolled on J Road just west of 22 Road. In the meantime, the vehicle had hit a pole at the intersection of J 3/10 and 18 roads, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department said.

The driver was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital by non-emergency transportation.
