Teen wounded in shooting

A teenage boy was rushed to a hospital with a gunshot wound Friday night after being shot by a friend in the bedroom of his Grand Junction home, according to the Grand Junction Police Department.

The hospitalized teenager, a friend of a boy who lives at the home at 623 25 Road, had been stabilized at the hospital, according to Police Department spokeswoman Kate Porras, but she did not know his condition.

The victim was shot in the upper abdomen with a single round from an assault rifle at about 7 p.m. The alleged shooter’s mother was in the home at the time of the shooting, Porras said.

The incident was reported as an accidental shooting, but officers are investigating the case, Porras said.

Police did not release the boys’ names Friday night.

The Mesa County Assessor’s Office lists the owners of the home as Gabriel and Maria Gutierrez.
