Telluride Resort proposes amphitheater

Telluride Ski Resort issued a proposal to the town of Mountain Village last week to build an 8,000-seat outdoor amphitheater on Misty Maiden ski run above the Heritage Plaza.

The project is in the beginning stages, and a timeline has not been established, according to resort spokeswoman Maryhelyn Kirwan.

“We think it would bring some economic vitality to the Mountain Village area,” Kirwan said.

The town of Telluride hosts festivals such as the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in June and the Telluride Blues and Brews Festival in September.

“We can hopefully work with the festivals to provide music up in the Mountain Village as well,” Kirwan said.

Dave Riley, CEO of the resort, said in a news release the proposed area is a natural amphitheater with a gentle upward slope that needs to be improved for the use.

A stage and concession area would be built near the bottom of Competition Hill. It would be able to offer daytime and nighttime concerts and performing acts.

Riley said the venue would generate consumer activity in Mountain Village restaurants, bars, retail stores and hotels before and after events.
