The race tightens

Sen. John McCain said late last week he believes he can win the presidential election Tuesday. And that’s not just late campaign rhetoric designed to rally the troops.

Every major poll still shows Sen. Barack Obama leading McCain, but virtually all of them show the race has gotten closer in the past weeks and some indicate it’s continuing to tighten.

“The obvious question is whether McCain can continue to narrow that gap enough over the next four days to catch Obama,” said a Friday posting by Mark Blumenthal of Pollster.com, one of the leading poll analysts on the Internet. Blumenthal concluded it would be difficult for McCain.

However, an Associated Press poll also released Friday showed 14 percent of likely voters still hadn’t made up their minds in the presidential race.

As trite as it may sound, the tally of the only poll that really matters will be conducted Tuesday.
