The Western Rim: One woman’s favorite ride

If I had to pick just one local ride then Western Rim would be it.

With incredible scenery and a fun roller-coaster singletrack, it’s a canyon country classic. I like to start in the Rabbit Valley parking lot before the road dips down into the bed of McDonald Creek and from there I follow the Kokopelli Trail past Castle Rocks as they jut out of the sea of undulating grass and sagebrush.

At a wide spot in the road and up on a high bench with views reaching as far as the snowy peaks of the La Sals in Utah, the trail drops through a sandpit before landing on the rim itself. From here mile after mile rolls beneath the wheels, alternating between slickrock and dirt, flowing up and down the swell of the earth along the cliff edge carved by the shimmering ribbon of the Colorado River far below.

Eventually the trail ends back on the Kokopelli doubletrack which can be return you to the parking in Rabbit Valley. Usually I turn the bike right around and go back the way I came — I can never have too much of the Western Rim.

Either way, Rabbit Valley’s trail No. 2 from the wide spot in the road is a must on the return, another rip-snorting trail that will ensure a permagrin for the rest of the day.
