Three Junction locations close post office boxes
The U.S. Postal Service will stop delivering mail to post office boxes at three contract locations in Grand Junction on April 17, a move officials said will reduce costs and increase efficiency.
About 600 post office box holders will be affected when officials stop delivering mail to contract locations at Mesa Mall, 2139 N. 12th St. and 759 Horizon Drive. Customers will have the opportunity to transfer post office box service to the main post office at 241 N. Fourth St. or the Fruitvale post office at 2923 North Ave.
Grand Junction Postmaster Daniel Reyes said the change will reduce manual mail delivery costs and move post office boxes to post offices that have newer, more advanced computer systems.
“We know it’s an uncomfortable change for some, but we’re going to try to make it as smooth a transition as possible and make sure that whatever needs they have are met,” Reyes said.
Grand Junction resident Pete Theis said Action Pistol Group, which teaches firearm safety, has had a post office box at the 12th Street location for three years.
Theis, the president of the group, was unhappy to hear he’ll have to change where he picks up mail sent to the group.
“This is going to create a major hardship,” Theis said as he walked out of the 12th Street post office Thursday afternoon.
Reyes said the elimination of post office box service will not affect other mail services provided at the three contract offices.
