Time to plant seed for a winner
It’s pumpkin seed time for at least one local business.
With prime planting season around the middle of April, the owners of Black Carriage Furniture, 2580 U.S. Highway 6&50, are encouraging people to stop by to pick up seeds for their annual heaviest pumpkin growing contest. Seeds should be planted outside by Mother’s Day for best results, the store says in a news release.
Black Carriage Furniture, which organizes the growing contest in cooperation with KEKB and KOOL radio, will be giving away a $1,000 grand prize for the heaviest pumpkin grown locally.
Contestants are asked to submit photos of their pumpkins when turned in for weighing, showing the pumpkins still on the vine with a view of the landscape in order to prove they were grown locally, according to the release.
Pallets will be provided to all contestants toward safely moving the pumpkins.
Pumpkins can be turned over to Black Carriage between Oct. 18 and Oct. 24. The grand prize will be awarded Oct. 25.
Current store hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
