Tipton collects $140,000 toward campaign

SCOTT TIPTON

Scott Tipton, the Cortez Republican hoping to take on incumbent U.S. Rep. John Salazar, D-Colo., collected $140,000 in first-quarter campaign contributions.

The quarter leaves Tipton with less than one-quarter of Salazar’s $1 million campaign war chest, which was plumped up with $305,000 in the first quarter.

Tipton’s collection includes no political-action-committee money and represents 451 new contributors, his campaign said.

About 80 percent of contributors gave less than $250, the campaign said.

With cash on hand of $191,000 from a total of $250,000 collected, Tipton still must grapple with Bob McConnell of Steamboat Springs for the GOP nomination.

The 3rd Congressional District includes most of Western Colorado and much of southern Colorado.
