Too-quick start costs Whiteley win in Kansas

Jim Whiteley’s win streak came to a stop.

The Grand Junction top-alcohol dragster driver red-lighted by one thousandth of a second in the semifinals of the Dollar General Nationals this past weekend at Heartland Park in Topeka, Kan.

“I honestly don’t know where that came from,” Whiteley said in a news release. “I have been cutting pretty consistent lights lately. You just have to take it as it is and move on. You definitely hate to let one get away from you like that.”

Whiteley qualified for the elimination rounds with a 5.331-second elapsed time (et) at 265.9 mph. He defeated Buddy Domingue in the first round with a 5.365 et at 267 mph. Whiteley ran a 5.278 at 272.45 in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals.

His run of 5.316 et at 272.01 in the semifinal would’ve beaten Rich McPhillips if Whiteley didn’t jump the start a tad too soon.

McPhillips went on to win the Dollar General Nationals title.

Whiteley and the YNot Racing team are scheduled to race in the NHRA Central Regional on June 15–17 at Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, just outside of Denver. Whiteley is the four-time defending champion at the event.

Whiteley is second in the 2012 NHRA Lucas Oil Top Alcohol Dragster season points standings with 350 points. Chris Demke of Sunland, Calif., is first with 403.
