Trick-or-treaters have sweet spot for toothbrushes
This time of year, the home of Tom and Carol Tadvic in the Galaxy Subdivision is commonly referred to as the “Toothbrush House.”
Every neighborhood child knows that when they ring the bell on Halloween they will be rewarded with a shiny new toothbrush instead of candy. And, they like it.
“It’s just always been something really fun that we do,” Carol said.
Tom, a retired dentist, has given away well over 1,000 toothbrushes since he started the family’s tradition 45 years ago. “We just didn’t feel comfortable having candy so we started handing out toothbrushes from my office,” he said.
The Galaxy Subdivision has always been popular with trick-or-treaters, especially when many of the homes still had young children.
“It used to cause some chaos,” Carol said while remembering how popular their home was on Halloween night. Some of their clients would make a special trip to the neighborhood just to get a new toothbrush.
“It was really fun because mothers would come with their children and yell from the car, “Hi Mrs. Tadvic — thanks for the toothbrush,” Carol said with a laugh.
Their daughter, Jennifer Campos, can remember a long line of cars in front of her house as a child.
These days Halloween traffic is more manageable but the Tadvicks still give away 30 or more brushes. They also include a little treat too.
“I guess we’ve mellowed with age,” Tom said but he still takes comfort in knowing that he helped get a toothbrush into the hands of a child.
