Trio questioned after man finds stolen vehicle in desert

Three people were detained at gunpoint and taken in for questioning this morning after a man who reported his vehicle stolen earlier this week found the vehicle in the desert north of Grand Junction — with someone asleep inside, according to police.

The man, who lives on Orchard Mesa, reported to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department earlier this week that his Jeep Cherokee had been stolen. Just before 10 a.m., the man was driving out in the desert and spotted the stolen Cherokee parked off the side of the road, Grand Junction Police Department spokeswoman Kate Porras said.

The man approached the vehicle, found another man sleeping inside and detained the man at gunpoint until officers arrived. As officers were dealing with both men, three people in another vehicle approached the scene at a rapid speed and ignored officers’ commands to stop and stay back, Porras said.

The three people inside the vehicle were detained at gunpoint and taken to the Sheriff’s Department for questioning, Porras said. No arrests have been made yet.
