Truck runs over woman

An Iowa woman was critically injured Monday after she was run over by a semi-trailer at a gas pipeline construction site in the Piceance Creek Basin.

Authorities received a 911 call at 2:19 p.m. about the accident, which occurred about 45 miles southwest of Meeker.

Bonnie Stevens, 43, of Iowa City was operating a pilot car for a 127-foot semitrailer that brought in a large piece of equipment used to bend pipe. She was standing between two of several sets of dual tires when the trailer started to roll, according to Rio Blanco County Undersheriff Michael Joos.

Stevens tried to get out of the way but fell in the path of the tires. One of the dual set of tires struck her in the head, chest, right arm and right shoulder area, Joos said.

The truck driver, 64-year-old Ronald Tolson of Lenoir City, Tenn., had released the air brakes on the trailer without setting the brakes on the tractor, Joos said.

Stevens was airlifted to St. Mary’s Hospital in critical condition. She underwent surgery Monday evening and was listed in serious condition. Tolson was issued a summons for an unattended motor vehicle.
