Truck spill shuts down I-70 near De Beque

Westbound Interstate 70 near De Beque was closed for more than two hours Friday night after a barrel fell off the back of a trailer, spilling slick liquid all over the roadway and triggering multiple car accidents.

The incident happened around 7:30 p.m. when a 55-gallon barrel of lubricating fluid for drill rigs fell off a trailer a couple of miles west of De Beque. A pickup trailing behind struck the barrel, breaking it open and spraying the fluid across the westbound lanes.

At least two accidents were reported, although no major injuries occurred.

Traffic was backed up for miles. Colorado Department of Transportation crews were called out to spread sand.
