Two lost 8-year-old boys spend night in Mesa barn

An overnight search-and-rescue mission for two 8-year-old boys in Mesa was called off after the boys were found leaving a barn Saturday morning.

The boys wandered away from home Friday night, and when they realized they were lost and couldn’t make it back home, they decided to spend the night in a barn, according to a news release from the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department.

Mesa County Search and Rescue was called to the town of Mesa at approximately 10:30 p.m. Friday to begin a search.

By morning, a recorded call was sent to the residents of Mesa to be on the lookout for the boys.

More than 30 volunteers were searching for the pair on foot, by all-terrain-vehicle, by air and by going door-to-door.

A property owner spotted the two boys coming out of the barn around 9 a.m. Both were in good condition with no injuries, the news release said.

Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Lisa McCammon said she did not know how far from home the boys had wandered.
