Two people shot late Friday at residence on Orchard Mesa

Two people were shot late Friday night in an Orchard Mesa neighborhood, according to scanner traffic. Neighbors called it a “drive-by” shooting.

The incident was relayed on the scanner shortly after 10 p.m. One victim sustained two gunshot wounds to the abdomen and one to the thigh, and the other victim suffered a single shot to the stomach, according to the scanner. The Mesa County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene.

Neighbors said they heard five gunshots coming from the direction of the cul-de-sac in the 200 block of Boston Lane.

“Somebody went blazing in there; I heard five shots and then they came squealing out,” said Ed Mueck, a neighbor who lives on adjoining Hartford Avenue.

He said in the past six months traffic in and out of the cul-de-sac has greatly increased.

“We’ve been wondering what has been going on down there,” Mueck said. “A lot of traffic for a dead-end street.”

Mueck and his wife, who have lived in the neighborhood for 14 years, said they were impressed by the quick response from law enforcement; it couldn’t have been more than five minuets before they arrived, he said.

This is not the first sounds of gunshots Mueck has heard in the neighborhood. About a month ago he heard one, probably shot up into the air, “just for giggles.”

Besides the two ambulances that took the victims to the hospital, a third was called for a woman who passed out on the same street, according to scanner traffic.
