University of Western Colorado the most popular pick for new Western State name

More than half of respondents to a recent online survey picked University of Western Colorado as their favorite replacement for the Western State College of Colorado name.

The Gunnison college is considering a name change as early as this fall. The college posted a survey on its website between Dec. 20 and Jan. 27 to glean feedback on a potential new name.  There were 2,357 responses to the survey from students, alumni, staff, community members and others.

About 85 percent wanted a new name with “university” in the title.

Fifty-four percent picked University of Western Colorado as their favorite among five name options. Eighteen percent wanted Western Colorado University; 17 percent picked Western State Colorado University; 6 percent selected Western University of Colorado; and 5 percent preferred Colorado Western University.

The 22 percent of respondents who selected “other” could write in an alternate favorite. About one-third of people who picked “other” wanted either Western State University or Western State University of Colorado to become the school’s new name. The rest either wanted to keep the current name or suggested another name that used college instead of university.

The survey results will be used to inform a decision by the college’s board of trustees this spring about whether to move forward with legislation that would change the institution’s name.

As with a survey taken by Colorado Mesa University alumni, students, staff and community members last spring to inform that school’s name change, the most popular name may not become the trustee’s choice for a new moniker. University of Western Colorado was the most popular name in the Colorado Mesa survey as well. But then-Mesa State College trustees picked fourth-place Colorado Mesa based on a list of objectives for marketing a new name.

Western State trustees also requested Colorado Mesa not pick a name with “west” or “western” in the title to avoid confusion between the two institutions.

But for the ineptness,  incompetence, and gullibility of Tim Foster and the Mesa State Board of Trustees, the name could have been ours!
