Ute Water hooks up grateful residents

Ute Water today will complete work on a new water system serving about 250 properties in the Rosevale and Connected Lakes areas.

Ute Water was called in when the Artesian Water Service system serving the area was failing and the owner was about to abandon it because of a pending balloon payment he couldn’t make.

Almost all the customers of the old service signed up for Ute Water service, and except for the final two holdouts, today marks the end of receiving service from the previous system, Ute General Manager Larry Clever said.

“I’m turning the water off on Monday” to the old system, he said, adding the switch has gone “more smoothly than I thought” it would.

Ute Water stepped in at the behest of Mesa County, which obtained a $600,000 state grant to help replace the old system, Clever said. Ute Water also put about $1 million toward the project, he said, and final costs have yet to be calculated.

Justin Bates, who spearheaded the project for Ute Water, met frequently with residents, urging them to sign up for Ute service. Most overcame their original doubts and were excited to sign up when Ute began construction, especially one woman.

“She was so excited,” Bates said, because she no longer had to cross the street to a friend’s house to shower. “We got lots of thank yous, lots of cookies and lots of cakes.”

The old system used 2-inch lines, far too small to provide adequate fire protection, Clever said. The new system has 6- and 8-inch lines, offering plenty of pressure for household use and fire protection, he said.

The new system also makes some land available for development, Clever said.

Residents had to pay $5,000 all up front or agree to pay $30 a month for 30 years. Residents can start with installments and pay off the total early, if they wish, Clever said.

“It’s not bad,” new customer Floyd Harrell said. “I never got better pressure.”
