Vandals hit preschool 3 times

Grand Junction police officer Steve Huskey investigates a vandalism Saturday morning at a District 51 preschool on 18th Street. This is the third consecutive Friday night that the school has been ransacked.

A School District 51 preschool on 18th Street was vandalized for the third week in a row Friday, and neighborhood parents who send their children there aren’t happy about it.

Jennifer Menzies, who lives across the street from the former elementary school, said previous incidents merely left a mess, but this time vandals used a fire extinguisher in nearly every room of the building.

The Grand Junction Police Department is investigating, but it released no information Saturday about the incident.

“I’m not really nervous about leaving him there because it’s an evening thing,” she said, referring to her 4-year-old son who goes to the school. “But it’s kind of unnerving. It’s just across the street, and you never know if they’re going to start hitting your house.”

Menzies said police told her they suspect middle school children, but they said little else. She watched as they took fingerprints and collected evidence. She said it was the third Friday night in a row the school was vandalized.

“The first weekend, they stole a digital camera and knocked stuff over and trashed the place,” Menzies said. “The second time they trashed the place again and, for some reason, decided to drink all of the juices that were left in the fridge and left the containers all over the floor.”

Menzies said she doesn’t know if the police plan to increase patrols, but she and her neighbors are considering forming a neighborhood watch group to take turns monitoring the school.

“The police didn’t really share a whole lot,” she said. “Sometimes, if the cops can’t do anything, you’ve got to kind of do things on your own.”
