Verizon service outage hits GJ

Customers wondering what happened to their wireless service are lined up out the door Monday at the Verizon store at 25 1/2 Road and U.S. Highway 6&50.

Verizon Wireless customers swarmed Grand Junction stores Monday after phone and texting services were dead for hours.

A spokesman for the company could not be reached for comment, but a local Verizon worker said the company was having problems with a cell phone tower. Service was thought to be out for only the Grand Junction area. Service was restored by Monday evening.

Verizon service went dead for nearly a day on April 22 for the Western Slope, eastern Utah and southern Wyoming. Spokesman Bob Kelley at that time said the outage was caused by a data glitch.

Some residents reported spotty service throughout the day and dropped calls.

Mesa County, Grand Junction’s fourth-largest employer, uses Verizon service for its 270 cell phones.

County spokeswoman Jessica Peterson said the outage made it difficult to get work done on Monday.

“It’s making my life a little more complicated,” she said.
