Veteran singer Prine to be at Avalon Theatre
The night that changed John Prine’s life was an open mic night at a Chicago club named Fifth Peg.
When Prine, then a mailman in Maywood, Ill., got done singing the audience didn’t applaud and Prine thought, “Uh oh. This is pretty bad,” according to Prine’s biography by Paul Zollo from Oh Boy Records.
Then the applause came on strong and “the club-owner offered him a gig, and from that moment on he quickly became one of Chicago’s most beloved local heroes,” Zollo wrote.
Prine, whose musical career includes his debut album in 1971 and a diagnosis of a rare form of cancer in his neck in 1998, will perform at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, at the Avalon Theatre, 645 Main St. Doors will open at 7 p.m.
The opening guest is Carrie Rodriguez, the Austin, Texas, singer/songwriter, who performed at this year’s Colorado Riverfront Concert Series finale in July.
