Victim of fatal crash was DUI suspect’s son
The boy who died in a two-vehicle crash Sunday is the son of the man accused of driving drunk and causing the accident, according Montrose County Coroner Thomas Canfield.
The boy, Jose Prieto, died instantly of head and neck injuries, and the manner of death is being ruled an accident, the coroner said. Officials are still trying to determine whether the boy was 7 or 8 years old, Canfield said.
Jose was a passenger in a Chevrolet Camaro driven by his father, Juan Prieto-Gonzalez, 32.
Two-year-old Araceli Gonzales, who was one of four passengers in the Chevrolet Suburban that collided with Prieto-Gonzalez’s car, was listed in critical condition Tuesday at St. Mary’s Hospital.
Police allege Prieto-Gonzalez ran a stop sign at 5400 Road and entered into the path of an
oncoming Suburban traveling on Colorado Highway 348.
Prieto-Gonzalez was in custody Tuesday on a $100,000 bond in Montrose County Jail on suspicion of 14 charges, the most serious being vehicular homicide and three charges of vehicular assault and driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Prieto-Gonzalez has been arrested five times previously for DUI.
