Warrant issued in 2010 slaying

Suspect jailed on unrelated charge

Joseph Conn

Willard Michael “Mike” Bobbitt

An arrest warrant has been issued in relation to the August 2010 slaying of a man whose body was found in the Colorado River south of downtown Grand Junction.

A judge signed an arrest warrant Monday for Joseph Lee Conn, 23, who is suspected of the first-degree murder of 36-year-old transient Willard Michael “Mike” Bobbitt.

Grand Junction Police Department spokeswoman Kate Porras said she could not provide further details on the case or the warrant, because it was filed under seal.

Conn is being held in Sacramento County Jail in California on charges unrelated to the Bobbitt case.

Sacramento Police officers arrested Conn and two others on Jan. 5 in connection with a suspected botched robbery attempt that ended in the beating death of a Sacramento man and the severe beating of his roommate on New Year’s Day 2011, according to The Sacramento Bee. Conn was arrested in Sacramento on suspicion of first-degree murder, attempted murder and attempted robbery in relation to that incident.

Conn’s next court date in Sacramento is scheduled for Jan. 6, 2012.

Conn’s arrest history in Colorado includes a lone 2010 traffic case. According to Colorado Bureau of Investigation records, Conn was arrested June 9, 2010, by the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department on suspicion of leaving the scene of a hit-and-run accident, failure to report an accident, driving with a suspended license and careless driving causing no injury.

A passerby discovered Bobbitt’s body under the Fifth Street bridge the evening of Aug. 11, 2010. That morning, homeless people found a bloody sleeping bag snagged on the riverbank about a quarter mile from where the body was later found and turned the sleeping bag over to Grand Junction police.

Bobbitt’s last known address was in Montrose.
