Warriors knock off Durango

Holden Reed scored on a three-yard quarterback keeper with 2:14 remaining Friday night to give the Central High School football team a 20-14 victory over Durango.

The victory all but secured a berth in next week’s first round of the Class 5A state playoffs for the Warriors (4-5, 2-2 Southwestern Conference).

Central gave up two first-quarter touchdowns, including a 65-yard reverse pass from Easton Garcia to Kaelen Waters on the first play from scrimmage, but came back with an 80-yard touchdown run by Josh Buniger less than a minute into the third quarter.

Reed scored on a 15-yard run just before the end of the third quarter to pull the Warriors to within 14-12.

Reed ran the ball to the Durango 5 yard line late in the fourth quarter but fumbled. The Warriors, who gave up only two first downs in the second half, got the ball back and Reed directed the final scoring drive over a five-minute span for the go-ahead score.

Central coach Vern McGee said the team made a defensive adjustment at halftime to Durango’s three-receiver set.

“The kids played so much better in the second half,” McGee said.

Buniger finished with 122 yards rushing; Reed rushed for 108 yards.

Central’s defense held the Demons to 162 yards rushing, under its season average, and allowed only four pass receptions.

Durango (8-1, 2-1 SWC) plays at Montrose next Friday for the SWC title.

Central, which finished second among the three Class 5A teams in the Southwestern Conference, learns its fate Sunday when the Colorado High School Activities Association’s football committee releases its 32-team playoff bracket.
