Weather Service issues freeze warning

Hold that trowel and keep the plants inside.

Just when you thought it was safe to plant that garden, the weather has its own ideas.

A freeze warning is in effect for midnight Tuesday to 9 a.m. Wednesday, with temperatures threatening to dip to the low 20s in low-lying areas, according to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction. Freeze warnings are issued to notify residents of the low temperatures that may kill sensitive vegetation and crops.

The warning also is in effect along the Colorado River to the Silt area, in the Gunnison and Uncompahgre river basins, and in the Four Corners. The Weather Service also had issued a winter storm warning for heavy snow in the northern and central mountains of Colorado, including the northern San Juans and the Uncompahgre Plateau. That warning was to expire at midnight.
