Fire destroys wood chipper at GJ sawmill

A fire consumes a chipper Saturday at the Doug Jones Sawmill near the Riverside Parkway.

A fire destroyed a commercial-grade chipper Saturday, but firefighters kept the blaze from spreading at Grand Junction’s only sawmill, Doug Jones Sawmill, 1441 Winters Ave.

Jones said he uses the chipper about once or twice a year, and he had run it for about three hours Saturday morning when it caught on fire at 12:30 p.m.

“It’s fortunate it didn’t spread,” he said. “(The chipper) is not integral to our operation.”

The chipper, valued at $500,000, is likely a total loss.

Grand Junction Fire Department firefighters strung hose for about 1,000 feet to fight the blaze because a hydrant at the mill, which was the closest to the blaze, was inoperable.

The fire did not spread to any other timber that was stacked in piles nearby.

“We’ll be open for business Monday,” Jones said.
