We are thankful

For blue skies and sunny days.

For traffic that flows steady and red lights that turn green at exactly the right moment. For a full tank of gas and the money to pay for it. For straight roads that stretch to a sharp horizon.

For fresh powder.

For waking up in a panic then remembering it’s Saturday. For nothing to do or everything to do. For leaves raked and dirt moved and grout scrubbed and oil changed, and for a welcoming sofa at the end of that day.

For an almost-forgotten song drifting from the car speakers—the “Oh, yeah!” pang of recognition, the time travel of memories unfurled from their linen, the vision of a loving smile and that evening in spring. For times remembered.

For lungs full of air and feet with forward momentum. For the strong thump-thump-thump of a beating heart. For wiggling fingers. For a booty to shake.

For the heavy weight of blankets as fat flakes fall outside. For a downy layer of marshmallows on top of the cocoa. For thick socks and comfortable shoes.

For a burst of speed.

For chord progressions and key changes. For a stack of library books. For a pair of aces, for being the ninth caller. For the rain when it comes.

For the end of a dirt road as the sun sets, miles from the nearest anywhere, and the sudden miracle of a million stars. For trails that wind between the vivid iron grit of redrock walls, then soar above timberline, above the clouds, to the top of the world. For welcoming meadows of wildflowers on the way back down.

For a dog wagging its tail practically off, it’s so happy. For nosy feline whiskers at 6 a.m. For three blue eggs in a sheltered nest.

For doors held open, for spontaneous grins. For “please” and for “thank you.”

For adequate bars on the cell phone. For engines that do their thing when the key turns. For new shingles and copper pipes. For hot showers.

For supermarket shelves full of food, and some of it on sale! For steak cooked medium, with a baked potato on the side. For crimson tomatoes warmed all day by the sun. For clean water and the first cool sip of it on a sweltering afternoon.

For a roof and four walls. For Band-Aids and bifocals and pacemakers.

For bad things that don’t happen and good things that do.

For a regular paycheck. For any paycheck. For strong arms and sturdy backs. For willing hearts.

For those who stand in harm’s way. For those with extended hands, with capable minds, with listening ears. For having things worth cherishing.

For the friends who will be there—anywhere—always and in all things. For shared laughter that veers in breathless zigzag toward bent-double, tears-streaming, stomach-aching cackles. For a guaranteed ride to the airport.

For moms who still worry. For dads who fix things. For the perfect safety inside their arms.

For sleeping babies. For hands to hold. For a steady spot on which to stand. For the promise in a brilliant sunrise.

For mashed potatoes and breast meat, green bean casserole and pumpkin pie. For the familiar, beloved faces circled around it.

For life, and most especially for love.

We are thankful.

We are thankful.

We are thankful.
