Wildfire threatens cabin near John Brown Road

A fire is blazing southwest of Gateway off of John Brown Road, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.

As of Monday night, the fire had consumed 5-7 acres and was threatening one cabin, the Sheriff’s Office reported.

Bureau of Land Management, Gateway Fire Department, Land’s End Fire Protection District and Sheriff’s Office personnel are working together to contain the fire, which has been nicknamed the Bucket Fire.

Single-engine air tankers and a helicopter are dropping water and fire retardant on the flames.

The Sheriff’s Office reported that the fire is burning on private land and has been fueled by the surrounding shrubbery and pine trees. The office asks for those planning to recreate in the area of the fire to change their plans until further notice.

John Brown Road, also known as 4 4/10 Road, is a scenic backcountry road between Gateway and Utah’s La Sal Mountains and eventually to Moab. It’s a popular drive for four-wheeling and dirt biking enthusiasts.
