Win a scooter at High Desert Gathering
Don’t be surprised to see an unusual amount of scooter mayhem on the streets of Grand Junction next weekend.
The High Desert Gathering begins Friday, Sept. 28 and will welcome all types of scooter enthusiasts.
Two local scootering clubs, The Blue Ribbon Kings and the High Desert Scooterists, have invited riders from across the nation to enjoy the Grand Valley.
Scootering clubs are different than motorcycle clubs, explained Brenden Smith, a Blue Ribbon King.
They “aren’t exactly hardcore bike clubs,” he said, although his club does require members to be vetted, pledged and voted into the group by a quorum.
People who enjoy scooters are drawn together by a common interest in scooters, he said. Some enjoy fixing the bikes while others enjoy the camaraderie of having someone to ride with.
“Others are in it because of the music they listen to which is a part of the scootering culture,” Smith said.
The gathering will begin with a backyard barbecue and party at Smith’s house.
On Saturday, the riders will travel as a group over Colorado National Monument to Kannah Creek Brewery. A second ride will take place from the Grand Vista Hotel to Motorcycle Accessories. Evening ruckus will take place at Naggy McGees Irish Pub.
That’s also the night that someone is going to win a fully restored 1986 Honda Gyro scooter among other raffle prizes.
The Gyro is a rare and highly-prized scooter among scooter enthusiasts.
Raffle tickets are $1 and can be purchased from members of either Grand Valley club. Other prizes were donated by event sponsors including Caribou Motorcycle Luggage, Scooter Brewing Company, Main Street Bagels, Planet 9, Seeds of Revolution, and No Coast Sushi.
The gathering will end Sunday with an awards ceremony at Cruiser’s Bar.
