Woman hit by car dies Sunday

A 79-year-old California woman was hit by a truck on Horizon Drive and died Sunday night.

Loretta Clark Pereda of Whittier, Calif., was struck by a northbound vehicle near the entrance to Country Inns of America, 718 Horizon Drive, according to the Grand Junction Police Department. She was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital, where she later died.

The driver of the vehicle that hit Pereda remained at the scene Sunday and was interviewed by officers.

Multiple blunt force injuries caused Pereda’s death and the manner of death was accident, the Mesa County Coroner’s Office determined Monday.

A press release from the coroner’s office said Pereda and a companion were staying at the Super 8 motel at 728 Horizon Drive during a trip to Mount Rushmore. Pereda tried to cross Horizon Drive Sunday in an attempt to go to Applebee’s at 711 Horizon Drive for dinner.
