Woman jailed after high-speed chase, crash

A pursuit late Thursday involving a Denver woman and a Colorado State Patrol trooper topped 100 mph on Interstate 70 and ended with a crash near Palisade.

Lauren Hmami, 24, was booked into the Mesa County Jail early Friday on suspicion of eluding, reckless driving and speeding 10 to 19 mph over the limit, among other charges, after she was treated for unspecified injuries at St. Mary’s Hospital, according to State Trooper Josh Lewis.

Lewis said another trooper originally tried pulling over Hmami’s Kia Spectra for allegedly speeding westbound — 81 mph in a stretch of I-70 in DeBeque Canyon with a posted speed limit of 60 mph — around 11:26 p.m. Thursday.

The trooper’s pursuit, which topped 100 mph, lasted seven minutes and followed the Kia as it got off I-70 at the 44 Exit at Palisade, according to Lewis. The Kia rolled and crashed around 38 Road and U.S. Highway 6.

Hmami, the lone occupant, was extricated from her wrecked vehicle by firefighters. She was being held at the jail on a $3,000 bond.
