Wreck on U.S. 50 kills 1
A Delta man died Tuesday afternoon after he lost control of his vehicle on U.S. Highway 50 north of town and slid into oncoming traffic.
The man, Anthony Abachiche, 25, was pronounced dead at the scene, said Colorado State Trooper Nate Reid.
Abachiche was driving east on the highway when his Volkswagen Passat hit water on the roadway about 2:30 p.m., slid sideways into the depressed median and continued onto the westbound side of the highway, Reid said.
There, his vehicle hit a 1995 Dodge pickup driven by Mitchel Dietrich, 25, of Grand Junction, the trooper said.
Dietrich suffered minor injuries in the accident.
The driver’s side of Abachiche’s car struck the pickup, Reid said.
“It could have been a possibility of too fast for the current conditions,” Reid said. “You always have to maintain control of your vehicle.”
Witnesses said it had rained and the wind was blowing at the time of the crash.
