Xcel wants more consumers paying for solar power

DENVER — Xcel Energy wants more consumers to pay for solar power.

Under a proposed program, customers could subscribe for a portion of the capacity from a large-scale solar plant.

The program is similar to Xcel’s Wind Source program, which has about 35,000 residential consumers and 1,000 businesses paying a premium to guarantee some or all of the electricity they use is generated by wind.

The Denver Post reports the program still must be approved by the Colorado Public Utilities Commission.
