Fewer haunts are hosting frights this Halloween in Grand Junction.

There appear to be just three this year — the Trail of Terror haunted house at 601 Pitkin Ave., and the Haunted Acres indoor and outdoor haunted walk at 2465 I Road.

Mesa State College students also are getting into the act.

Last year, Mesa County Partners had a haunted house at the organization’s former location at 735 South Ave. The year before that, Partners hosted a haunted house in the old Ultronics building at 2150 Grand Ave., which since has been torn down.

This year, Partners couldn’t find a building to hold the haunted house, according to Partners administrative assistant Kala Langstaff. Partners worked with local real estate companies, hoping to borrow a building for a few months, but Langstaff said no deal could be worked out.

“If we’d been able to have a building, we definitely would have had a haunted house,” she said. “We definitely want to do one next year.”

Partners will still get a little fundraising money this Halloween. Nick-N-Willy’s will donate a dollar to Partners for each pizza bought this Saturday.

Bananas Fun Park will not have its haunted corn maze open this Halloween because the business couldn’t find a farmer to plant the corn this year, according to Bananas spokesman Brian James.

The fun park will host other Halloween events for kids, though, from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday. For $10, kids can play laser tag, get free candy and prizes, hop on an indoor bump-n-jump and have pictures taken with Dora the Explorer. There will be a costume contest from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. inside Bananas’ new special events pavilion.

The Grand Junction Jaycees hosted a haunted house at 2830 North Ave. in 2008, but joined the list of groups going without a haunted house this year.

Haunted Acres opens at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday and is free for kids 4 and under and $8 for everyone else. Part of the proceeds will benefit Grand Valley Horse Rescue.

Admission to the Trail of Terror costs $10. The haunted house is open 6 p.m. to midnight every night through Saturday. All proceeds go to the Express All Stars cheerleading squad.

Mesa State students will stage “The House of Lost Souls” at Houston Hall, 12th Street and North Avenue. The event will be put on at 9 p.m. Friday by the Center of Student Involvement.
