Cindy Selders first thought she and her family had been shot at.
Out for a late drive Thursday for dinner at Clifton’s McDonald’s, Selders and her three grandchildren were driving north and were about to crest the top of the 32 Road overpass in Clifton when a rock smashed through the passenger side front window on their vehicle.
The rock missed her 4-year-old grandson in the front passenger seat, but her 6-year-old granddaughter, sitting in back, was hit in the head.
The girl wasn’t hospitalized, but the remaining bump on her head may mean a doctor’s visit today, Selders said.
“It’s cowardly and very dangerous,” she said.
Mesa County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Mary Gonzalez said deputies were called out around 8:30 p.m. on reports of several vehicles hit by rocks in the area.
Selders, 55, believed the rocks were thrown from the side of the overpass into oncoming traffic. She didn’t see who threw it.
“It’s been going on a few days now,” Gonzalez said.
Selders said her vehicle was one of three that were hit Thursday night.
